Warning issued over drink-driving during the holidays
If you want a driving ban this Christmas and higher car insurance for young drivers later, you will choose to ignore the latest advice from a motorists' organisation.
The Irish Advanced Motorists (IAM) has warned that festive parties and family get-togethers could lead many people to take a risk by drinking too much alcohol and then getting behind the wheel.
The IAM said measures at other people's houses usually tend to be much larger than those from pubs. Just one drink at a student bash could take young drivers over the limit.
With alcohol staying in the system until the next day, people planning to enjoy the merriment - and alcohol - at parties should leave their car keys at home.
Factors that can affect a young motorist's ability to drive:
- Weight
- Age
- Gender
- Metabolism
- Stress levels
- Anything eaten
- Alcohol drunk
To stay safe on the road during the holidays, the best advice to follow is that if you want a drink, don't drive. That way, you can keep driving in the New Year and help ensure cheaper insurance for young drivers at renewal time.
