David Coulthard to advise on driver training scheme

In a bid to reduce the price of insurance for young drivers and to promote road safety issues many councils and motoring organisations offer training courses for young motorists. Most will tackle issues relating to speed, hazard awareness and will promote conservative driving, but David Coulthard has just announced his involvement in a young driver programme that will encourage some of the fastest driving around.

Since retiring from Formula 1 racing last year Coulthard has decided to stay with Red Bull and has taken on a key role in the nurturing of future racing stars.

Coulthard, appearing at the Autosport International Show recently, said, "I will be doing a number of things for the team.

"Essentially using my experience as a driver to help with the young driver programme, to test the Formula One car as and when that might be necessary if the race drivers are not available - there's probably not going to be much of that, if any, now that the testing regulations have been changed.

"As Red Bull is such a big investor in motorsport, not just F1 but across the board, my desire is to make sure they get value for what they invest because they're very important to motorsport. To make sure that they stay involved in motorsport for many years they have to get good value for their spend."

Red Bull boasts one of the largest young driver support programmes in motor racing with graduates from the scheme, such as Sebastian Vettel and new Torro Rosso signing Sebastien Buemi, going on to drive in top flight motor racing teams.

A spokesperson for Hoot, specialist providers of insurance for young drivers, said, "Top drivers, particularly those that drive at speed, realise the value of driver training. Without proper tuition and experience, all driving exercises can be dangerous. Even if you don't want to be a racing driver taking a Pass Plus course could help keep you safe and make your car insurance quote cheaper."
