A survey by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has revealed that buyers of insurance for young drivers are the group most likely to lie to their cover provider in the event of a claim.
Motorists were questioned whether they would tell their insurance provider if they had failed to secure their car properly when claiming for a stolen vehicle.
Of the twenty-and-over age-group 15% would lie in order to get a payout from their insurance firm.
Older drivers appeared to be more honest; only six per cent of the over 50 age-group and five per cent of 60+ drivers would commit fraud by covering up their own neglect.
Moneysupermarket.com's managing director of car insurance said, "It is easy to see how someone may be tempted into lying about a moment of carelessness, yet it's important to remember it is still against the law.
"Moreover, claims regularly paid out to drivers who hold back the truth result in the honest drivers missing out and in some cases causing the cost of future motor premiums to rise."
He urged those trying to find cheap car insurance for young drivers to be truthful when claiming so that cover does not continue to get more expensive. He also reminded drivers that preventing the theft of their vehicle was always the best option.
