Parliament listens to cheap car insurance debate

More should be done to prevent motorists from taking to the road without having cheap car insurance, a Liberal Democrat spokesperson has said.

A spokesperson for the party brought up the issue following an answer to a parliamentary question, which said that drivers convicted of driving without motor insurance only receive a fine of £169.

She believes that this is not enough to prevent motorists from getting behind the wheel without have the right cover - something that could risk their young driver car insurance premiums in the future.

She said: "Much more needs to be done to catch and prosecute uninsured drivers, whose actions cost law-abiding drivers thousands of pounds a year. These figures are bad news for law-abiding motorists."

A spokesperson for Hoot Car Insurance Services, the online car insurance company, said: "The cost of UK motor insurance for young drivers can leave some out of pocket but there is no excuse for driving without the right cover. The best advice is to search around for the cheapest quote, something that we can definitely offer motorists."
