Young driver car insurance customers stunned by proposals

Teenagers could have longer to wait until they get their hands on young driver car insurance if proposals to raise the driving age from 17 to 18 go ahead.

MPs have backed plans to possibly increase the driving age to 18 in a bid to limit the number of accidents taking place which involve novice drivers.

According to Government figures, there were 12.6 deaths on the road in 1992 for every 100 motorists aged 17 to 20. By 2005 the figured had increased to 19.2.

The proposed plans were made by the Commons Transport Committee who, in their paper titled 'Novice Drivers', said that learner drivers should complete a minimum amount of tuition hours before taking their test at age 18.

Plans for consideration also stated that new motor insurance customers shouldn't be allowed to carry passengers in their vehicles who are aged between 10 and 20 during late night hours.

Commenting on the paper, Transport committee chairman Gwyneth Dunwoody said, "The time has come for a revolutionary change. I think some males would like to drive at 11. But the reality is that we aren't talking about people having the odd crunch.but people killing themselves and killing others."

Officials are hoping that the proposals could see a decrease in the number of people being involved in severe car accidents. If this happens, new drivers may also benefit from cheaper young driver car insurance rates.

Louise Ellman, a member of the committee added, "If we look at what's happened on the roads, road casualties are actually going down, except for that group of young new drivers where casualty rates are actually going up."
