An unprecedented number of motorists could be putting their chances of finding an affordable student car insurance policy at risk by engaging in text messaging while driving, according to a new survey.
However, in a twist on the typical idea of the texter-driver, the survey reveals that it is not mere text messaging that is posing a threat to road safety and the affordability of student car insurance – new forms of mobile phone use, such as social networking are also proving a widespread distraction to drivers, young and old alike.
Conducted by Halfords, the survey revealed that 29% admit to checking their phones while behind the wheel, with many freely admitting that they answer phones, make calls and send text messages while apparently being in control of their vehicles.
A spokesperson with student car insurance specialist Hoot comments, "Young drivers face enough obstacles to finding cheap insurance cover as it is.
"Being caught texting and driving, as well as putting points on your licence, will do your bank balance no favours either, coming at the cost of a £60 fine and a potential increase in the cost of student motor insurance cover."
