Young drivers are urged to keep their cars roadworthy

As the financial crisis worsens the cost of car insurance for young drivers is an ever increasing worry for many young motorists. Now, new research by Auto Trader has revealed that 51% of motorists are also concerned about affording repairs after a failed MOT inspection.

Worryingly, 10% of those polled, waited until after the due date before booking their vehicle in for the test and, in an attempt to save further money, 7% admitted being late in renewing their road tax.

The survey also found that 32% of motorists who had a problem with their car at the time, were putting off getting it repaired. Of those, nearly 15% said the fault was "quite major" and 5% "very major".

Auto Trader marketing director, Matt Thompson, said, "It is extremely worrying that nearly half of all UK motorists are prepared to drive around in an unroadworthy vehicle to try and save money during these difficult times.

"We believe that motorists on the whole are very responsible, but with tightening budgets and possible job losses looming, motorists are being very careful with their money and feel that they have no option but to sacrifice essential vehicle maintenance as the cost of motoring continues to increase."

A spokesperson for Hoot, providers of car insurance for young drivers, said, "We would warn our customers that driving a car without valid road tax or one that has failed its MOT invalidates your insurance policy and in the event of an accident the insurers would not pay out."
