Study claims anti-drink campaigns may make things worse
In what must increasingly seem like an intractable problem for road safety and health authorities, a study from Bath University has suggested that anti-drinking drives may be having a counter intuitive effect.
Every year, drivers on UK roads suffer injuries and are forced to make motor insurance claims as a result of being involved in collisions with drunk drivers, yet it seems high-scale prevention campaigns may only be worsening the problem.
Bizarrely, the study claims that these hard-hitting campaigns may actually be having the effect of glamorising such drunken behaviour as passing out and vomiting.
The lead researcher with the Bath team commented, "Our detailed research interviews revealed that tales of alcohol-related mishaps and escapades were key markers of young peoples' social identity."
Any drink-drivers would be well advised to remember that when the time comes to renew their motor insurance premiums, car insurance companies look less kindly on drink-driving than they do on many other road safety offences, considering drink-drivers to be among the worst liabilities.
