Drivers may want insurance for their in-car gadgets

Cheap car insurance companies which have attempted to highlight the dangers of using mobile phones while behind the wheel may be alarmed to hear that connectivity is becoming the buzz word' in the car industry.

According to the KPMG Automotive Executive survey, a large majority of motoring executives are anticipating the emergence of partnerships between the world's car manufacturers and telecommunications companies.

This could mean that a large number of soon-to-be-released vehicles will be equipped with hands-free kits and sophisticated satellite navigation systems.

An automotive expert said, "As consumers become accustomed to instant access at home and in the office, customers will expect the same services when on the move in their vehicles.

"In the future, connectivity will not simply be a 'nice to have' feature but an intrinsic part of a vehicle. Right now the market is open for the taking, and global manufacturers and suppliers are beginning to realise the potential of this market."

This statement was made following revelations by a provider of student car insurance that the awareness and anticipation of people who drive while on their phones is significantly reduced.

Motorists who want to avoid making a cheap car insurance claim have been urged to keep their eyes on the road and keep technological devices turned off when behind the wheel.
