New driver car insurance high because of lack of training - IAM

One of the primary reasons new driver car insurance is high, is because, due to lack of experience, they are far more likely to be involved in an accident behind the wheel.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), one of the UK's leading road safety charities, has reported that driver error is the number one factor in fatal crashes.

According to the organisation, easily avoidable problems such as poor manoeuvring skills, loss of control, and failure to notice potential hazards, cause 65.3% of all fatal accidents on our roads.

The chief executive of IAM said that he was shocked by the statistics, as they were all problems which can be reduced as drivers gain more experience. He has stated that having a driver's licence does not suddenly provide new motorists with all the skills necessary to reduce their risk of being involved in an accident

He said, "Professional drivers participate in continuous professional development, improving their driving skills throughout their careers to reduce their accident rates."

It is the opinion of IAM's chief executive that similar training involving private motorists, who drive their car for personal use, could be life-saving and reduce the cost of young driver car insurance.

The IAM is calling on the Government to do more for new driver car insurance holders, such as introduction of post test training which provides much needed skills and benefits the road user throughout the rest of their lives.
