Car key invention to keep young drivers safe
Car maker Ford is promoting a new invention to develop safer driving - and hopefully lead to cheaper young driver car insurance.
A computerised car ignition key - called MyKey - is due to start rolling out in the Ford Focus range of vehicles from 2010.
It is currently being marketed as a device that parents can program to prevent their teenaged sons and daughters driving dangerously.
A range of safety features are pre-programmable:
- Speed limiting functionality
- Traction control activation
- Seat-belt alarms
- Low fuel warnings
- Reduce stereo speaker volume
Ford's electronics director, Jim Buczkowski, said, "MyKey can help promote safer driving, particularly among teens, by encouraging seat-belt use, limiting speed and reducing distractions."
Hoot has been reviewing media reports and found that MyKey is attracting mostly positive coverage. Journalists have paid close attention to Ford claims that MyKey can help reduce speeding.
A Hoot spokesman said, "This looks to be a useful device that could help keep down the cost of Ford car insurance."
Speeding is known to be a major factor in crashes among young motorists causing fatalities and injuries and affecting the cost of young driver car insurance.
