Young drivers face bans driving at night in the USA

Lawmakers in the United States have been acting to stem the high numbers of fatalities involving teenage drivers - and the apparently spiralling cost of young driver car insurance.

In the latest new piece of legislation that looks likely to become law, motorists aged under 18 in Arkansas state would be banned from driving between 11pm and 4am except for emergencies, work and school activities.

And in North Carolina there are multiple bills under consideration that will make it illegal for under 18-year-olds to use mobile phones while driving - or even while parked and simply sitting inside a vehicle.

The legal moves highlight high levels of concern among legislators and the public at large about the toll of deaths and injuries amongst young drivers and those involved in road accidents with them.

A proposer of the Arkansas bill, Senator Jimmy Jeffress, said accident statistics showed that teenage motorists were involved in high numbers of traffic crashes at night.

"Inexperience and immaturity are significant contributors. I've been a teacher for 28 years. I know what inexperience and immaturity is," he said.

As well as potentially reducing the death toll among motorists, a spin-off benefit is likely to be a corresponding reduction in the cost of young driver car insurance quotes and premiums as the risk of teenagers being involved in road accidents is likely to reduce.
