Learner driver without car insurance kills friend in crash

An inexperienced 21 year-old driver who drove without car insurance for a learner driver and then killed his friend in a crash, has told a court that he drove on the day of the accident because he was bored.

The driver took his stepdad's car without consent and, as he told the court later, decided to drive "just as fast as he could."

The learner driver, who had previously spent just 10 hours behind the wheel, lost control of the vehicle at 60mph on a bend. The car overturned, flying through the air, then landed in a field 150 feet from the road.

The car crash resulted in the death of the teenage passenger.

The court fined the young driver £575, ordered him to do 150 hours of community service and banned him from driving.

Relatives of the deceased derided the sentence as "a joke", but the judge said that although the case had tragic consequences she was unable to take that into account when sentencing.

The driver also admitted to driving without car insurance for a learner driver and without L-plates.
