A speed-limiting device for UK vehicles may lead to more accidents and higher claims for car insurance, young drivers and more experienced motorists have been warned.
A motoring organisation has queried statistics used by the government that suggest up to 29 per cent of injuries in crashes could be prevented by the device, called intelligent speed adaptation (ISA).
The government has been taken to task by the Association of British Drivers (ABD). It argues the figure is "misleading", pointing out that different factors other than speed can be responsible for accidents.
While the ABD recognised that 12 per cent of accidents could be caused by breaking the speed limit, it pointed out that the statistic relating to excessive speed for road conditions - 17 per cent - should not be included in the government's calculations.
An ABD spokesman said, "Clearly ISA cannot control inappropriate speed under the posted limit and the 29% claim is therefore demonstrably bogus."
The ABD warned more accidents might happen because the ISA device may lead to people believing that the safest way to drive is always at the speed limit.
As a result, claims for car insurance, young drivers and older motorists have been advised, may not become any cheaper should they choose to use the ISA system.
