Speed camera hacked down and buriedSome people go to extreme lengths to protect their right to a cheap car insurance quote, but two young drivers from Austria might have gone a bit far by hacking down a speed camera with an axe and burying it in a field. The 19-year-old Austrians were cruising through the town of Lustenau when they were snapped breaking the speed limit. But instead of simply waiting for their fine to come through the post, the pair decided to take matters into their own hands and destroy the evidence. They just happened to have a couple of axes and a saw in the boot and so pulled in to the roadside, tooled themselves up and set about chopping down the much-hated piece of equipment. It didn't take long to hack through the stanchion holding the camera before it toppled to the ground in a tangle of wires and cracked lenses. Surprised at the size of the camera, the teenagers couldn't think of a way to dispose of it properly and so, panicking a little, decided to bury it in a nearby field. Their sneaky deed done, the pair then went on their way confident that no speeding ticket was heading their way and that their right to cheap car insurance for young drivers was protected. It was something of a shock, therefore, when the youngsters received an unexpected call from the police several months later and were promptly arrested over their part in the camera vandalism. The cops had been contacted by an angry farmer who had come across the buried equipment whilst ploughing his field, apparently damaging his plough in the process. Further investigation revealed that photos of the youths were still on the camera's film and so it was only a matter of time before they were tracked down. Appearing in court, the teenagers were fined a combined total of £75,000 and were also warned that their access to cheap car insurance is likely to suffer as the result of the initial speeding penalty finally being enforced.
