Online car insurance firm left claimless by contaminated fuel scare

It looked like being a car insurance company's worst nightmare, but for one firm at least the recent contaminated petrol scare is yet to produce a single claim.

As of 2 March 2007, staff at online car insurance giant Direct Line are still waiting for the first of their customers to report an engine failure or any other fault brought on by contaminated fuel.

"We've had no claims as yet, nothing registered at all. It could be a storm in a teacup," said Emma Hoyler, speaking on behalf of the online car insurance firm.

Many motorists in the south-east appear to have been affected by the impurity, which interferes with cars' oxygen sensors.

Direct Line have said that such problems will be covered by your motor insurance policy, provided the claim is backed-up by an engineer's inspection. However, it has been suggested that large excess fees could be responsible for many of the drivers concerned not coming forward.
