Online car insurance companies and new brands beat off the old in top ten
Online car insurance firms and new players in the insurance market are beating off the old guard when it comes to the price of premiums, a new study by moneysupermarket.com has shown.
Researchers at the car insurance comparison site have put together a top ten of 'consistently competitive motor insurers' for 2006 - and an online car insurance firm is at number one.
At £276, swiftcover.com offered the cheapest average car insurance premium for the year, closely followed in the top five by other young insurance companies like Post Office and More Than.
By comparison, some of the more established names like Swinton and the AA ended up amongst the least competitive firms.
If you want really expensive car insurance, however, try a little known insurer at the very bottom of moneysupermarket.com's table. And, with a whopping average premium of almost £1,500, department store Debenhams' car insurance line looks set to stay there for another year at least.
