It seems that online car insurance customers might have to start using their savings for gym memberships after a recent report suggested that cars are contributing to the nation's obesity problem.
A paper published by the Institute for European Environmental Policy and Adrian Davis Associates has stated that people rely too much of their cars and drive on short journeys that could easily be taken by foot.
In the UK, 40% of all journeys are less than two miles but even though it can take just 30 minutes of brisk walking to complete these journeys, 38% of them are made by car.
A doctor who commented on the report said: "The substitution of cars for walking is a major contributor to the steep rise in obesity, as walking is the most obvious way for most people to burn calories.
"A small daily reduction in walking over a decade or more has a profound and damaging impact on body weight."
A spokesperson for Hoot Car Insurance Services, the young driver car insurance provider, said: "It seems that we as a nation are getting a little podgy. The best advice we can give is to maybe spend your online car insurance savings on a few exercise courses to increase the amount of weekly exercise you do."
