Online car insurance site warns against direct debitsOnline car insurance customers are being warned to avoid direct debits if they are hunting for a cheap car insurance policy. The guidance comes from price comparison site MoneyExpert.com, which claims that the average car insurance firm charges a whopping 22.7 percent extra for direct debit payments. That's an extra £182 added to the UK's average annual premium of £806. Instead, the online car insurance site is recommending paying the full amount of your premium upfront, using a credit card. There's no charge at all for this payment method, so you'll be free to enjoy that cheap car insurance rate you were expecting. A spokesperson for MoneyExpert.com said: "Motor insurance premiums are at an all-time high and experts reckon they will continue to climb as both the number of claims and the value of claims continues to rise. "Given that average comprehensive annual premiums are £806 it is no surprise that drivers opt to pay monthly to spread the costs over the year rather than paying in a lump sum. But that option comes at quite a substantial price. "Motorists can still get good deals by shopping around and you should always review your insurance every year. But when you look around make sure that your savings are not going to be swallowed up by the extra cost of paying by direct debit."
