Online car insurance site finds most crashes happen close to home

The latest research from online car insurance site moneysupermarket.com reveals that UK motorists are six times more likely to crash on local roads than when travelling on the motorway.

You might think that the high speed and relative monotony of motorway driving would lead to a high frequency of accidents; but in fact only five percent of motorists have crashed there.

By contrast, a whopping 29 percent of those surveyed by the motor insurance site said they'd had an accident on roads that were close to home.

The rates for minor roads (25 percent) and for A-roads and dual carriageways (23 percent) were similarly high - and also in stark contrast with the figure for motorways.

"This suggests motorists become complacent when navigating familiar routes, often leading to costly prangs," said a spokesman for the online car insurance site.

"Danger clearly lurks close to home," he added.
