Online car insurance firm struggles to link colour to crash risk.

Findings from the latest driver survey have proved remarkably inconclusive, reports online car insurance firm yesinsurance.co.uk.

Their research was intended to help motor insurance firms refine risk-calculations by taking the colour of a customer's vehicle into account, but it yielded wildly contradictory results from the 4,000 drivers who were polled.

Red cars were the subject of most confusion. "We asked drivers which colours they thought were the safest and most dangerous as far as the likelihood of having an accident was concerned," said Paul Purdy of the online car insurance site. "Red came top of the poll as both the safest and most dangerous colour."

That's right: 23 percent of those surveyed thought red was the safest colour, but 35 percent thought it was the most dangerous. White, silver and grey returned similarly ambiguous results.

In the face of such underwhelming results, Purdy was forced to admit: "From an insurance point of view we make no distinctions as far as colour is concerned."
