Online car insurance site suffers after Google changeFinancial services comparison site Moneysupermarket.com has been dealt a blow by technicians at Google, the web's pre-eminent search engine. Like most online car insurance sites, the success of Moneysupermarket.com is reliant on the number of people Google directs to its pages when they search for certain relevant keywords, such as "cheap car insurance" or "motor insurance". Until recently it had enjoyed a high level of traffic from such searches, but changes in the way Google algorithm (the set of rules by which it judges the suitability of websites) have put an end to that. Moneysupermarket.com, which launched in 1999, had been poised on the brink of a £1 billion flotation - but financial experts think this change in fortune could put a stop to it. "The internet is still a very young, dynamic marketplace, and the online car insurance business has seen its share of success-stories and failures," said Mike Page, spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services. "Flexibility is the key quality for any online firm, and if Moneysupermarket.com has what it takes then it should be able to recover," he added.
