Mobile phones could endanger online car insurance customersRoad safety charity Brake has demanded that the government acts on motorists who continue to drive while using their mobile phones behind the wheel. Online car insurance customers are put at risk every day from the danger of law breaking motorists who fail to pull over to a safe area when using their mobile phones. At the present time, anybody caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel could face receiving a £60 fine and three penalty points being added to their licence. With such penalty points, motorists could also face paying higher premiums in the future on their motor insurance. Brake is demanding the government increases the punishment to six penalty points and a £1,000 fine - they believe this will be enough to deter motorists from picking up a ringing phone. Head of education at Brake, Jools Townsand, said, "The justice system needs to get tough on drivers who take needless risks with terrible consequences. We want to see appropriate sentences given to drivers who kill through their dangerous actions." Commenting on the issue, a spokesperson for Hoot Car Insurance, the cheap car insurance provider, said, "If caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel you could face getting points on your licence which will in turn increase your next online car insurance premiums. "The best advice to give to somebody who wants to answer their phone is to make sure they pull over into a safe area and turn their engine off."
