Young drivers admit to being uninsured

Moneysupermarket.com, one of the leading price comparison websites, recently revealed that one in six UK drivers, including many who are eligible for student car insurance, have driven without cover.

Some people have admitted to taking to the roads in their own vehicles, despite not possessing car insurance for new drivers. Others have taken to the wheel of another person's car without the necessary cover.

An astonishing 27% of individuals surveyed by Moneysupermarket.com said that they didn't realise that insurance is a legal requirement for all drivers.

Peter Harrison, representative of the high profile website, said, "it is illegal to get behind the wheel without adequate cover and should you be involved in a crash when not insured you could face thousands of pounds in liability, a conviction including six points on your license as well as charges of up to £5000.

"Uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million each year, which as a result adds an average of £30 to every motorist's premium. Coupled with rising fuel prices, you can see why people are looking to cut costs, but car insurance is a necessity for all motorists."

Inexperienced drivers are among those most likely to do without cover. It was also found that males are far more reluctant to pay out for student car insurance than females.
