Handheld phone driving incidents down

It seems that the introduction of strict fines, the imposition of penalty points and the risk of jeopardising entitlement to cheap car insurance has had some effect in reducing the number of drivers prepared to drive while using a handheld mobile telephone.

Statistics from the Department for Transport reveal that the recorded incidence of drivers being caught using handheld mobile telephones is down by 40%.

While neglecting to mention that the risk of drivers losing their entitlement to cheap car insurance is one possible disincentive to the dangerous practice, the road safety minister commented, "Since February, drivers illegally using their mobile phone have risked three points on their license and a £60 fine . this survey suggests more and more motorists are getting the message."

Although the fact that motor insurance companies are far less likely to offer cheap car insurance to crash prone phoner-drivers - the risk of having crash while using a mobile phone is increased by 400% - many offenders fail to take this into account.
