Drivers who fail to inform authorities of who was behind the wheel of their car when speeding could be putting their cheap car insurance at risk.
The Driving Standards Agency has introduced a new rule that will see motorists receive six penalty points on their licence if they fail to disclose the identity of the driver caught speeding.
This action has been introduced in a bid to combat the number of motorists that say they don't know who was driving the car at the time of a speeding fine. The initial point system meant that motorists would receive three points; the new six points could deter motorists from trying to escape a fine.
The six penalty points could adversely affect a young driver's cheap car insurance premium, leaving them either out of pocket or, with any more points, without a car.
Paul Smith, founder of anti-speed camera campaign group SafeSpeed.org.uk, said: "This change has absolutely nothing to do with road safety - it's just spiteful.
"The authorities have forgotten that driving licence points were supposed to help identify risky drivers.
"Giving extra points to people who simply fumble the paperwork will further devalue the licence point system."
It is believed that UK motor insurance customers will not be too happy about the points system if their cheap car insurance policy shoots up in price.
