Police catch irresponsible youngsters

Police have fined 36 people with car insurance for young driver policies during the initial phase of a clampdown on irresponsible road users in Lancashire.

The recently qualified drivers were caught speeding, driving without tax and/or not wearing seatbelts, by a team from the northern division's road policing unit.

The officers also kept a close watch on passing cars to ensure that they hadn't been given speed-boosting modifications, which usually invalidate insurance for young drivers.

Police caught one motorist who was driving subsequent to being disqualified, and arrested two people on suspicion of stealing a bicycle.

Sgt Nigel Ralphson, representative of the northern division, said, "Crash statistics show that young drivers are amongst those most at risk of being killed or seriously injured on the road. This is largely due to their inexperience behind the wheel, coupled with a false sense of invincibility.

"Young drivers need to be aware of their responsibilities when it comes to road safety - losing your licence is a real risk, as is leaving behind a devastated family if you are hurt or killed in a crash."

Police from around Lancashire have visited schools and colleges, in an attempt to highlight the importance of safe driving to the future buyers of car insurance for young drivers.
