Tougher tests to cut price of car insurance for young drivers

According to Direct Line, 75 percent of instructors are worried that newly qualified drivers are still under-prepared for British roads.

Now the cheap car insurance firm is calling on the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to toughen-up the examinations in a bid to reduce the number of accidents and cut the price of car insurance for young drivers.

The instructors' lack of confidence is shared in many cases by the new drivers themselves. Eighty eight percent of those surveyed by Direct Line said they would have liked more training on rural roads before qualifying, and 84 percent didn't feel ready for motorways.

"The Direct Line study has revealed the extent to which people feel the driving test has under-prepared them for the roads," said a representative for the firm.

"Road crashes are the number one killer of people in their teens and twenties . in the interests of safety, we are calling on the Driving Standards Agency to improve the test."

The cost of car insurance for young drivers continues to soar well above the national average, and according to uSwitch.com it could rise to a staggering £3,000 per year by 2017.
