Motorists forced off the road by rising car costs

Dramatic increases in petrol and insurance costs are driving motorists off the road, according to research by MoneyExpert.com - and that's highlighting the need for drivers to shop around for cheap car insurance.

A quarter of car drivers now use their vehicles less often due to the soaring expense of running them, and many are switching to public transport.

With a litre of unleaded petrol now priced at close to £1.10 and comprehensive car insurance policies tending to average almost £630, people are starting to stop driving.

Families are estimated to need about £2,200 annually to stay on the road, compared to £1,400 ten years ago - that's a 50% increase.

MoneyExpert.com says older drivers are worst affected by the increases.

The study also showed about six million Britons switched providers in the last half-year in a search for the best cheap car insurance.

A spokesperson at Hoot Car Insurance Services said: "Our company is well-placed to help motorists struggling to lower their car insurance."
