Most dangerous Europe city for traffic accidents is Rome
Racy Roman moped riders and drivers are seriously threatening life and limb - and leading to soaring young driver car insurance costs - more often in their Italian capital city than any other place in Europe.
Road accident statistics have highlighted the worrying finding that, for road users, Rome is the most dangerous city across the European continent with hundreds of people dying and tens of thousands being injured on its streets.
While the style of driving may contribute to the atmosphere of a fun, bustling city, living the high life at breakneck speed, the hard facts of fatalities and injuries make for sombre reflection.
Figures show about 28,000 people, passengers and drivers, were hurt in some 21,000 crashes across the 580-square mile Italian city. More than 230 were deaths. The figures are so high the Road Safety Insurance Foundation has hailed them "a national emergency".
Per capita, accident levels in the UK are half those of Rome. Italy's demonic drivers, young and old, seem to pay scant regard for the law or rights of way for pedestrians.
Perhaps the high number of casualties - and pricier motor insurance quotes - are hardly surprising when watching the mad, speeding Roman motorcyclists and other motorists weaving their way through traffic-clogged streets, driving inches away from vehicles in front and ignoring road signs.
Casualties across Greater London - a much bigger area than the city of Rome covering almost 700 square miles - were, per capita, much lower than the Italian capital, with young driver car insurance and other cover rates also affected.
