OFT warns insurers

In what could represent good news to young driver insurance quote seekers, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has ordered motor insurers to limit the amount of information they share about customers.

Seven young driver insurance providers as well as two software companies have agreed that they will restrict data exchange after the OFT ruled that the practice could be in breach of competition law.

Rupert Roker, from the group Consumer Focus, told press, "We welcome the OFTs announcement that motor insurance companies will be prevented from sharing this type of information that they have in the past.

"A motor insurer knowing what prices a customer will be quoted by other firms is very bad news for consumers. It reduces the chances of insurers genuinely competing on price and could end up significantly hitting the pockets of unsuspecting consumers."

In a statement the OFT said that it was not only young driver insurance policyholders who could be disadvantaged by information sharing and warned all insurers to "ensure they are complying with competition law".
