"Safe Drive Stay Alive" campaign to cut young driver deaths

Thames Valley Police have responded to a rash of deaths and serious injuries on Oxfordshire roads with a series of talks and a hard-hitting educational film.

They hope to reach 10,000 young people with the "Safe Drive Stay Alive" campaign.

It all comes in the wake of the 52 road accident deaths that have taken place in the county this year - 12 more than took place in the whole of 2005.

One of the latest involved a 21-year-old man whose Renault Clio smashed into a van near Witney. Rescue workers managed to free him from the vehicle, but he died later in hospital.

"We must do everything we can to try and reduce the number of young people being killed or seriously injured on the roads," said Supt Mick Doyle, who heads the Thames Valley roads policing unit.

"Safe Drive Stay Alive is a huge campaign with a big audience and we are hoping we can really make a difference."
