Tyre maintenance advice for young drivers

Motorists who fail to properly maintain their tyres may receive a fine of up to £2,500, and perhaps even struggle to find cheap insurance for young drivers in the event of a crash.

According to a recent report from the Department for Transport (DfT) there were 860 instances of accidents caused by illegal or overly worn tyres during 2009.

Young driver car insurance companies are used to dealing with claims which could have been avoided if the motorists had conducted advisory tyre safety checks.

The Group Operations Director at ATS Euromaster, a tyre retailer and service provider, said, "If you drive a car or van then you must inspect the overall condition of your tyres, the tread depths and pressures at least once a month and before any long journey.

"With winter rapidly approaching it is advisable to consider replacing tyres before they reach the legal minimum, or to fit cold weather tyres and place your summer tyres into a tyre ‘hotel' until next spring."

The ATS Euromaster guidelines stipulate that tyre tread depth readings should be carried out in three separate areas across each tyre. Car and van tyres should not measure any less than 1.66mm.

Claims made by individuals with cheap insurance for young drivers may prove unsuccessful if tyres are found to be bald at the time of an accident.
