Police wield lasers in fight against speed
Pressure from local residents in Eastbourne has prompted police to utilise the latest laser technology in an effort to fight excessive road speed in the area. As well as increasing the likelihood of punishing speeding drivers, such efforts to increase enforcement of legal speed limits have an effect on the UK car insurance market.
Not only do they limit offending drivers' access to cheap car insurance, they also work to create safer roads, potentially bringing down the cost for residents looking to purchase motor insurance. It goes to show that speed has an economic as well as a human cost.
Laser speed tracking devices are said to be more accurate than standard speed cameras, making them a more reliable tool of enforcement. This is because their superior accuracy leads to fewer contested convictions.
A spokesperson with the constabulary in Eastbourne commented, "This device will be of huge benefit to officers in the fight to reduce the number of drivers who ignore speed limits."
Residents are said to be delighted that community pressure has brought about the move. No doubt they will be even more delighted if similar moves contribute to bringing down the overall cost of premiums in the UK car insurance market.
