Chance of cheap car insurance goes up in smokeDrivers who smoke at the wheel could find it costs them the chance of a cheap car insurance policy after the British smoking ban comes into force on 1 July 2007. And if the Local Authority Road Safety Officers' Association (LARSOA) has its way, smokers could be banned from lighting up whilst driving altogether. Representatives from the road safety organisation will tell the government that smoking is "a dangerous distraction" and can have the same negative effects as using a handheld mobile phone or eating at the wheel, both of which are currently prohibited by law. Even if the government rejects LARSOA's proposal, drivers who smoke could still be getting penalised - by their motor insurance providers. Financial services comparison site uSwitch.com has reported that some cheap car insurance firms already factor-in whether a driver smokes when calculating motor insurance quotes. And after the July ban on smoking in public places, more firms are expected to "jump on the 'higher premiums for smokers band wagon'", according to uSwitch's head of car insurance.
