Cheap policies to go up in smoke?

It seems that in the wake of the ban on handheld mobile telephone use while driving, motorists may face a further restriction on their driving activities: a ban on smoking. Such changes would also have the potential to affect smoker's access to cheap car insurance.

According to the Liverpool Daily Post, traffic police in the city are considering a move to target motorists who smoke and drive. If this situation does materialise, many smokers would have to resist their cravings in order to keep clean driving records and their chances of receiving a cheap car insurance quote.

News of the proposed move has been met with incredulity by the pro-smoking lobbyists Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco (Forest) argued that it is excessive.

A spokesperson from the group said, "The police should only stop and prosecute motorists if there is genuine worry and fear about the state of their driving - not if they are lighting a cigarette."

There is speculation that such a move could prompt research the dangers of smoking and driving. Any findings that show smoking to be a hazard would have the potential to further penalise smoker's access to cheap car insurance.
