Chances are that by the end of the winter many British drivers will be wishing they'd bought low mileage insurance cover, if pre-Christmas forecasts are anything to go by.
With much of Scotland, England and Wales in the grip of arctic conditions, including ice storms and heavy snow, road safety groups have been warning motorists to stay indoors, unless journeys are absolutely necessary.
In fact, conditions are so bad in many places that even low mileage insurance cover might be considered superfluous – "no mileage car insurance" might be considered more appropriate to drivers affected by some of the most extreme conditions. In keeping with this picture, it has been reported that some drivers have been forced to abandon their cars on motorways, with reports of several doing this on the M5 in Somerset.
A spokesperson from Hoot, which specialises in providing cheap low mileage insurance for young drivers, comments on the cold, snowy snap, "These are some of the worst driving conditions seen in the UK for a long time.
"This has been reflected in the surge of car insurance claims received by insurers. Although, some journeys are unavoidable, such as those made by emergency service crews, we advise all motorists to listen to local weather warnings and to heed the relevant advice."
