Running costs to hit £4000, forcing cars off the roadSoaring vehicle running costs - car insurance and fuel among key factors - are set to price UK drivers off the road according to expert forecasts, with the average bill already almost £4,000 per year. Part of the cost is fuel - and the price of a tank of petrol or diesel is predicted to average £129 in two years, compared to £65 now, hitting the motoring public hard in the pocket. The stark figures are highlighted in a study by uswitch - a price comparison service on the web, leading to fears that many motorists will be forced to stop driving. Motor insurance quotes, premiums and new vehicle tax bands are due to lead to drivers paying almost a quarter of their salary - 24% - running their cars. Uswitch consumer policy director, Ann Robinson, said the massive costs would hold drivers to ransom, especially pensioners and poorer families. "Don't forget that for many, a car is a lifeline and their quality of life will suffer if they are unable to afford to use it," she said. Another study, by Car Parts Direct, shows vehicles older than 20 years can be the cheapest way to drive - with car insurance, servicing, tax and fuel less than a year's depreciation on new cars.
