The results of a survey conducted by Thrifty Car & Van Rental, a vehicle rental company, show that young persons car insurance holders are particularly likely to ignore laws regarding traffic light signals.
Eighty-eight percent of the 17-year-old motorists who were questioned admitted that they had failed to stop at amber traffic lights. Many were oblivious to the differing meanings of orange and green signals.
A considerable number of drivers said that they had been lucky to avoid accidents after running amber lights. It is unlikely that student car insurance claims made by less fortunate motorists will prove successful.
The Central Services Director for Thrifty Car & Van Rental said, "Our survey clearly demonstrates that British motorists have a penchant for gambling amber lights, even though it's extremely dangerous and is breaking the law.
"The traffic light sequence is in place for a reason, and is designed to keep the roads and the motorists who drive them as safe as possible."
Of those drivers who had ignored orange lights, 33% claimed that they had been unable to stop in time. Rather surprisingly 7% said that their law-breaking actions had been made in consideration of other road users.
In related news, work has begun on a traffic light upgrade along Penn Inn and Keyberry Road in Devon. The new signalling equipment will reportedly make the roads safer, which may mean that fewer young persons car insurance claims are made.
