Car insurance and the hungry speed camera

Buying car insurance for young drivers alone can be a headache without thinking about the likelihood of getting a speeding fine.

In three weeks most speed cameras on UK roads will generate £10,000 in fines. Sound a lot? Not if you live in Lancashire.

A temporary speed camera set up to cover road works on the A56 has caused the issue of £72,000 of fines in three weeks, over seven times the national average; catching 400 drivers a week.

Ribble Valley MP, Nigel Evans said, "They really are raking the cash in on this camera. I think for those motorists doing under 70mph a warning letter would have sufficed. Why did they not put an electronic warning sign in place to slow the traffic down rather than a camera that is hitting the already hard-pressed motorist further?"

A Hoot car insurance company spokesperson said, "We would advise our customers that the cost of car insurance for young drivers may well be affected if you get penalty points on your licence. Whilst we do not condone speeding, some measures for policing our roads appear over-zealous, to say the least. Drive smart - don't break the speed limit."
