Criticism of new speed limit plans for UK

Cutting speed limits to reduce casualty rates on UK roads may be laudable, and might also reduce the cost of young driver insurance. However, motoring groups and others are questioning evidence that suggests the death and injury toll can be cut.

The UK government has announced a road safety consultation to make Britain's roads the safest in the world as well as help reduce the nation's carbon emissions.

It is proposed that the 60mph national speed limit on many of the UK's single carriageway trunk roads would be cut to 50mph - and some urban, residential and school roads may have limits cut to 20mph.

But motoring organisations appear to be sceptical that introducing the new restrictions would have a noticeable effect and questioned how necessary they were.

The RAC had doubts and was concerned police had not been pushing for the change. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) did not believe motorists would adhere to the new limits.

The AA (Automobile Association) pointed out that the country's councils already had powers to cut speed limits where they believed it was necessary. It felt the new limits were too restrictive.

While there are hopes motor cover insurers might pass on any cost benefits in reduced quotes and premiums, no evidence has been produced to demonstrate that young driver insurance would be reduced as a result of the speed limit changes.
