The death of a 19-year-old man has highlighted important issues about young driver's insurance with his family demanding steps be taken to prevent youths driving high performance cars.
The dead young man had been cycling home from work when a 21-year-old motorist in a 2.5l turbo Nissan Skyline - with eight penalty points on his licence - hit the cyclist while carrying out an overtaking manoeuvre.
The cyclist's grieving family said, "Our lives have been destroyed to such an extent that words cannot express the ferocity of the pain that has ripped through our hearts."
They called on the government and insurers to work to stop the devastating carnage and horrifying grief caused to many families by road accidents involving young drivers.
The family said, "To lose a child is truly the most crushing blow. To watch your other children suffer is yet another blow - and we will never recover from losing him."
They said companies providing cheap car insurance for young drivers ought to have a wider social responsibility, adding, "We particularly feel that those who make a profit from the motor business should be at the forefront of taking all measures necessary to maximise safety on our roads."
The family felt it was wrong that insurers were prepared to provide young driver's insurance to inexperienced motorists in control of powerful vehicles, especially drivers with penalty points.
