Young driver faces car insurance price-hike after speeding

Most of us know getting a speeding ticket means a £60 fine and three points on your licence - but few people are prepared for the staggering difference it can make to the price of car insurance for young drivers.

Take 23-year-old Andy Neary, for instance. He was caught doing 38mph in a 30mph zone outside Bury, Greater Manchester in early 2006.

Neary, an electrician by trade, was already paying though the nose for motor insurance as he drives a sports car - a Toyota Celica to be precise. Even before the ticket his annual car insurance premium stood at £900.

But when he came to renew his policy with young driver car insurance provider Direct Line, Neary found the speeding conviction had added a whopping £200 onto his motor insurance quote.

"Being a young lad and having a fast car, insurance is always expensive," he lamented afterward. "But mine, through one lapse of concentration, has got an awful lot dearer."

"Maybe Neary should consider switching to a different car insurance provider?" said Mike Page, who works for a firm called Hoot that specialises in car insurance for young drivers.

"He'll find that while some motor insurance firms come down very heavily on drivers with speeding convictions, other insurers are more understanding."
