There are concerns that students across the UK returning to their homes for the Christmas holidays could be at risk of making student car insurance claims caused by accidents in cold snap weather conditions.
For example, since the wintery weather became most acute on 25 November around half of claims received by AA Insurance in Scotland cite the weather as a factor, with an unconfirmed number thought to involve student car insurance policyholders.
The AA's public relations manager commented, "The point about Scotland is that the conditions are so severe that fewer people are taking to the road but those that do are significantly more likely to come a cropper in the snow and ice."
Aside from obvious fears for the personal safety of drivers, passengers and other road users, there are worries that an increase in accidents caused by the cold snap could result in rises in the costs of student car insurance premiums in the future.
If this does turn out to be the case, it is likely that students will have to search harder to compare the cheapest cover, as well as looking at innovative options search as low mileage car insurance.
