Family's bid to keep student car insurance holders safe

In a bid to lower mortality rates and student car insurance premiums for teenagers across the US, a Texas family has begun a tour of high schools across the state to raise awareness of the dangers of texting whilst driving.

After losing their daughter in a crash caused by texting at the wheel, the couple vowed to do everything they could to limit the number of such accidents in the future.

Now they travel the state putting on concerts and assemblies for hundreds of students, many of whom are left deeply affected by what they see.

"It was really sad," said a young driver car insurance holder from Dripping Springs High School. "I couldn't imagine my parents feeling that way and having everybody around me go through that.

"It's weird because when you make a decision like that [to text while driving] you don't think about how everyone else would feel," she added. "It makes you feel really selfish."

The couple's performances are backed by a band of Nashville musicians, who travel with them and perform songs written in memory of their daughter.

Speaking of the decision to abandon their old lives and take to the road, the couple said, "Our focus has to be on the kids... we don't want them to die."

In recognition of their service to the community, US TV network ABC has filmed a special two-hour episode of Extreme Home Makeover, documenting the lives of this extraordinary couple.

With such encouraging national exposure, their efforts could make an impact in the awareness and safety of teen drivers right across the United States - and lead to a lowering of student car insurance prices for all.
