A leading company who count student car insurance among their range of products have recently drawn attention to a large group of "stop start drivers'.
Research has revealed that around one fifth of these young motorists take to the roads once or twice a month at most. Rather worryingly, just 45% of these irregular drivers claim they can recall the rules of the road.
When they do finally resume their position behind the wheel they stand an increased chance of being involved in accidents.
Perhaps unsurprisingly many of the young drivers insurance holders who lack motoring experience admit to feeling either a little or very anxious when cruising the roads. Regular drivers are apparently far more confident.
Sarah Vaughan, an insurance expert, said, "Among the under-30s you have some very good drivers but there are clearly issues with those who rarely drive. Our research shows that experience really does count at all ages.
"We are currently working on a number of potential solutions for younger drivers and ultimately, we need to find ways that encourage them to drive safely for the sake of themselves and other road users."
It was discovered that people who don't take to the roads very often are more likely to do without student car insurance than those who drive on a daily basis.
