Police tackle summer drink-drivers

With the summer fast approaching, many drivers are heading out at lunchtime for a drink to celebrate the warm weather. However this can have fatal results and seriously risk motorists' young driver insurance.

Wiltshire police are fronting a summer drink-drive campaign to help raise awareness of the consequences of drink-driving.

Inspector Ian Stevenson who is leading the campaign said, "Even just half a pint consumed at lunchtime has a disproportionate effect on our ability to react to situations. The danger of falling asleep at the wheel is also increased."

Although many see Christmas as the most common time for drink-driving, the summer is just as bad.

Inspector Stevenson said, "The warm weather makes for a convivial atmosphere" and it is particularly prevalent among young people. The campaign is targeted at showing young people that drink-driving is not only dangerous, but could also lose them their licence and possibly even their job.

A drink-drive conviction will result in a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record and a fine of up to £5,000 as well as any chance of obtaining cheap young driver insurance in the future.
