Northamptonshire's Casualty Reduction Partnership has organised a road safety day for 40 of the county's 16-year-olds in the hope of preparing them for the dangers of driving before they are old enough to get behind the wheel.
It is hoped the day course will reduce the number of accidents involving next year's batch of new drivers - and may even lead to a reduction in the price of young driver car insurance.
PC John Spencer, one of the team behind the event, said: "Young drivers are a very vulnerable group in terms of road casualties.
"We are determined to do all we can to reduce the number of people, including young drivers, killed on the county's roads."
Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot, said: "It's great to hear that safety courses like this one are going ahead up and down the country.
"However, suggesting that a day-course for 40 students will lead to cheaper car insurance premiums seems pretty optimistic to me," he added.
