Top Gear's show last Sunday (28th June), superbly highlighted the problems faced by young people trying to find car insurance for young drivers. It particularly focused on the difficulty for young males fresh out of the test centre to firstly, find a company that will insure them and secondly, find a car insurance quote they can afford.
However, the programme has come under heavy criticism for the lack of rational solutions it gave to these problems and many car insurers have accused the show of encouraging the illegal practice of 'fronting'.
Other than a sex change for male drivers, the best advice that the trio could come up with for young drivers to find the best car insurance quote was to put their parents as the main driver of their car.
James May said, "It soon dawned on us that the only realistic way of getting covered when you are 17 is by going on your parent's insurance."
Although this may seem like a cheaper alternative at the time, it could land young drivers in serious trouble and cost them their driver's licence.
A spokesperson from Hoot, specialists in young driver's car insurance, said, "Fronting is a common fraud with severe consequences. With great quotes to be found for young motorists, there is no need to take such risks to save money on your car insurance for young drivers."
