Car insurance sales boost private tracker take-up
13/12/2010

With the rise of tracker car insurance in the UK, an increasing number of motorists are turning to similar technology to protect themselves in the event of a car insurance claim.

Until recently aimed only at haulage firms and other driving professionals, black box kits are increasingly being marketed at the individual to protect against prosecution or insurance liability following an accident.

Sky News recently tested the Roadhawk system, which continually records video and uses GPS to monitor speed and location.

Reporters were shown film of road traffic accidents captured on the device and corroborated by the GPS data.

The evidence provided is so clear that in some cases motor insurance firms are buying up the £200 units to give away to their customers.

"After an accident, witnesses will often claim to have seen something different. But the cameras give us the ability to determine legal liability because you can't argue in a court of law against video footage," said a spokesman for car insurance firm Towergate.

In the future, vehicles might well be fitted with as many tracking devices as there are interested parties: the tracker car insurance provider, the owner - perhaps even the police.
